How much Ritalin should you be taking? Since the side effects of Ritalin can increase with a high dose, this is an important question to ask. The problem is that your body will eventually adjust to the current dose. A higher dose will then be necessary to achieve the same effects. Whether you are prescribed a Ritalin 10mg pill or a Ritalin 20 mg pill will depend on your overall daily dosage.
As a general rule, children will take as little as 10 mg of Ritalin per day. This will often involve taking a 5 mg pill twice per day. The high end Ritalin dosage for adults is usually 60 mg. When you reach this dosage, you are probably taking 3 Ritalin 20 mg pills per day, before each meal.
A regular dose of Ritalin should be taken at least 30 minutes before you eat to ensure that the pill will have its full effect. Extended release doses don't need to be taken before a meal. It is recommended that you take your first dose of this medication early on in the day. If you must take it multiple times, try not to take your final dose later than 6 PM. It could potentially result in sleep problems if you take it later than that. If you happen to forget to take your medicine, take it as soon as possible, but don't try to make up for the missed dose with a double dose (a dangerous overdose could occur). And don't try to make it up later in the evening.
Ritalin overdose
A Ritalin overdose is dangerous and can be potentially fatal. If you, or if you believe someone else, have taken more than the prescribed amount of Ritalin, seek medical attention right away. Some people have intentionally ingested 100 mg or more of this medication in order try and get a “high” from it. This is an extremely dangerous practice and should be avoided at all costs.
The symptoms of an overdose will be a severe onset of many of the more common side effects as well as some other effects. These may include nausea, vomiting, headache, heat palpitations, and more. Confusion, hallucinations, and convulsions are possible. Increased blood pressure may lead to unconsciousness. Dry mouth, tremors, and a number of other symptoms may also occur. Medical help will be necessary at this stage. Don't try to ride out these serious effects at home.
