If you experience the effects of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, then you understand the importance of getting treatment. There are many options, but which one is best for you? While your doctor will be making that decision and prescribing you a medication, going into the office well informed will allow you to be apart of the decision making process. Let's take a few moments then to compare Adderall with a couple of other drugs that are prescribed for the same purpose.
Ritalin vs Adderall
First, let us look at a comparison of Ritalin vs Adderall, two of the most common ADHD drugs, and see how they match up. While Adderall is an amphetamine based drug that is only legal in the US and Canada, Ritalin is considered a psychostimulant. Both drugs are also used in the treatment of narcolepsy. Both drugs are considered potentially addictive, but Adderall addiction is the much higher risk between the two drugs. Adderall is known to cause weight loss as well as anxiety, headaches, irritability, and insomnia. The primary side effects of Ritalin are nervousness, insomnia, and drowsiness. A person that has become addicted to Adderall will experience depression, insomnia, irritability, and extreme fatigue while detoxing. Ritalin withdrawal symptoms include the potential for a strong recurrence of ADHD symptoms accompanied by depression and irritability. Results of the two drugs often depend on the individual. Adderall is currently the far more prescribed medication.
Concerta vs Adderall
Now, let's consider a comparison of Concerta vs Adderall. Concerta is a long lasting form of Ritalin. Whereas Ritalin needs to be taken three times per day, Concerta may be a once per day prescription, but it basically functions the same way. Adderall has responded by producing Adderall XR, which is a long lasting form of Adderall to be taken less frequently. Some have complained that Adderall XR does not last any longer than the normal drug and thus prefer Concerta, but there is no scientific data to back this up. One reason that some have preferred other drugs like Concerta over Adderall is that there has been a shortage of Adderall on a worldwide scale over the past 2 years. It is the far more prescribed medication of the two, plus it has a large black market following. This may make prescriptions difficult to refill on schedule.
Regardless of which medication you are prescribed, your physician will weigh the benefits of the drug versus the side effects before prescribing it. Always use your medication as directed.
