Prozac Dosage (Fluoxetine 20 mg)

The Prozac dosage that is prescribed by your medical professional will vary, depending on the medical condition from which you are suffering. Treatment programs of Prozac may be prescribed for patients suffering from chronic depression, obsessive compulsive disorders or panic attacks and anxiety disorders.

Dosages may be required daily or weekly, depending on the treatment program. If a dosage is missed during a daily regimen, simply take the medication shortly thereafter, when you first remember. Or you can wait until the next scheduled time. Do not double up on the next dosage when you have missed a preceding one. This could lead to a Prozac overdose, resulting in excessive vomiting, fainting or increased blood pressure.

Specific Dosages for Common Ailments

Except for patients suffering from severe depression, the prescribing physician will usually recommend a dosage of 20 mg ingested daily. This may last for as long as six months, but if the 20 mg form does not provide immediate and measurable benefits, the doctor might increase the dosage in increments of 20 mg with each new cycle. The maximum dosage rarely exceeds 60 mg.

Depression Treatments

As mentioned above, the prescribing physician will usually begin with a Prozac dosage of 20 mg. In some cases, the dosage may be divided into two separate intakes daily of 10 mg in the morning and 10 mg again in the afternoon. For more severe cases of depression, it may increase incrementally to daily total dosages of 80 mg maximum. Once the medication reaches these higher levels, the doctor may revise the treatment program to weekly dosages of extended release capsules consisting of 90 mg once a week.
