The Difference Between Xanax and Klonopin:
Quieting the mind and lessening the frantic feel of anxiety has been the objective for a large percentage of the population. Today's modern world breeds a sense of panic, depression and stress, in spite of our best efforts to avoid or control it. Doctors today rely on certain pharmaceuticals to help their patients regain some clarity and control. Two of these include Xanax (alprazolam) and Klonopin (clonazepam). What do each of these drugs do, and what is the difference between them?
Before heading into the Xanax vs. Klonopin section, here is a brief look at what each drug is and how they work. Xanax and Klonopin are both benzodiazepine drugs. The molecular structure of these two drugs are very similar. Both are used by physicians to provide relief from anxiety and panic attacks. Xanax slows the chemicals in the brain that can become unbalanced and, therefore, lead to anxiety or depression. Klonopin similarly targets the chemicals that can become unbalanced in the brain, but it strikes with less force.
This brings us to the differences between the two pills. In the Klonopin vs. Xanax match-up, most prefer the gentler approach of Klonopin. In what way is it gentler? Klonopin in its original design was intended to prevent and control seizures and seizure disorders (such as epilepsy). This means that it can be used over longer periods of time with less risk of becoming habit forming. Each dose is meant to last longer too. A patient will feel the results for a longer duration of time than with some other treatments. Now as for Xanax, this drug has a harder hit and it fades out quickly. Unlike its Klonopin counterpart, Xanax can be habit forming. This does not mean the drug is not effective. Those who suffer from panic attacks can appreciate the quick buzz provided by the drug for fast relief. However, as the effects subside a person may feel very tired. Sleep is a very common side-effect of Xanax. For this reason, those who keep a busy schedule generally try to avoid taking it.
While both Xanax and Klonopin can achieve their objectives, patients and doctors will want to consider the differences. Nobody wants to go on in an anxious, stressed, or depressed state. There are means available to help in the control of these unpleasant side effects of our modern way of life. So which will you choose - Xanax or Klonopin? The choice is up to you and your doctor.

I have to say something about the part of this article that states, " Unlike its Klonopin counterpart, Xanax can be habit forming."...... Guys, Klonopin is great to change over from xanax to, because it lasts longer and will give you less intense withdrawals but I've been through it and the Klonopin IS HABIT FORMING!! VERY!!! And also, while changing over to get less intense withdrawal is the key, Klonopin withdrawal can last for MONTHS. DO YOUR RESEARCH GUYS. People get on this medication everyday having no idea what they are really getting themselves into. Thanks for allowing me to post a comment.
It may depend on the person. Unlike Paxil and other drugs I can stop taking klonopin cold turkey with only a headache the next day. It's been the most effective for me so when I take too long I need to quit it a bit and take a slightly inferior med for a couple of months but then return to klonopin but that's me and not all people are either helped or affected by a given drug in the same manner.
I have been on klonopin for over 30 years.I am having hard time getting off.I have never tried, but know I need to!I'm sure its more mental than physical.Any suggestions?
I have just began t/x for anxiety and given klodapin. I do find its affects very calming, but I do notice if I don't take it which worries me. I'm prescribed 3 PRN daily, only taking 1 usually. I have been slowly trying to wait longer periods between taking my next dose, and hopefully discontinue them altogether within the next few weeks or so. I can see how they can become habit forming due to the relaxation they provide when overly anxious, and difficulties with sleeping (major issue for me). I would like to know if there is something that will offer the same type of relaxation without the possibility of dependency. So far this med has really helped! I just hope it stays that way. Thank you for all the earlier input!!
