Zithromax, or azithromycin, is a member of a group of prescription medications known as macrolide antibiotics and is employed as an effective medical treatment program for afflictions caused by bacteria. Some of the more common azithromycin uses include sinus infections, ear infections or otitis media, throat infections such as strep throat, numerous skin disorders and certain sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia and gonnorrhea.
The side effects are minimal and easily managed if the prescription program is managed effectively by the patient. Zithromax may have harsher side effects when ingested with other prescription medications, so it is important to inform your prescribing physician of your medical history prior to taking this effective medication. The combination of azithromycin and alcohol can increase these side effects as well.
Because these are not the only azithromycin uses for which doctors prescribe this medication, the dosage and treatment programs will vary and will depend on several factors of the patient's medical condition. Zithromax can be taken with or without food, but ingestion of the drug on a full stomach may cause nausea. Azithromycin and alcohol can increase these side effects that include dizziness, blurred vision and the feeling of lightheadedness.
One of the most notable azithromycin uses is for treatment of pneumonia. The general public often views this ailment as simply a more severe form of the common cold or flu, but in actuality is it often caused by a bacterial infection of the lungs and is therefore a very common and effective medical treatment for this condition. However, zithromax does not aid in curing the common cold or stomach flu as these are typically more virally caused infections.
It became a lifesaving drug treatment in the early days of the AIDs epidemic as pneumonia is a common reaction to having a depleted immunity system, making this treatment one of the more notable azithromycin uses of recent years. The patient would be prescribed this medication initially to cure the condition and then typically would follow with dosages once per week thereafter to reduce the possibility of the pneumonia reoccurring.
For many years, physicians have found that treatment for sexually transmitted diseases is one of the most beneficial azithromycin uses for the community at large. As these types of diseases, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, can be easily and quickly spread throughout the community and can lead to severe consequences including blindness, doctors quickly discovered that a onetime dosage of approximately 1000 to 2000 mg would rid the patient of the ability to continue to spread this debilitating disease.
